Driving a car with an automatic gearbox is easier than with a manual - automatics are being bought more and more often, but many drivers do not know what some signs mean.
Even after a long time, many do not learn what certain modes of operation mean and what they are needed for. It should be said that not all gearboxes have all the markings and modes of operation listed here.
Therefore, do not think that your car is missing something if, for example, no mode S, B or L, or "1", "2", "3" already quite outdated.
Basic modes: P, R, N, D
To get you started, these are the four main ways an automatic transmission works.
P mode is "Parking", ie. parking mode. In it, the transmission is mechanically locked: the output shaft lock locks the gears, which prevents the car from rolling downhill, just like when you put a manual transmission vehicle in first gear or "reverse" while the engine is off.
This mode should never be used when the vehicle is still in motion and should not be relied upon when parking on steep slopes. With it, you must always use the manual brake, engaging it first and only then shifting the transmission into P.
R Mode is 'Reverse'
Backward movement of the car
N mode
N mode is Neutral, that is neutral transmission and is rarely used in modern cars with automatic transmission. It will help you, for example, when you are standing at a traffic light and do not want to keep your foot on the brake, or when you need to push the car or load it into a tow truck.
It is also used in some older "true SUVs" where it is necessary to shift into neutral before engaging reduction gear or all-wheel drive, when shifting into a lower gear, or when selecting drive mode with all wheel drive on the SUV. But, you should remember that towing an automatic transmission car with the engine off can damage the transmission.
Mode D is driving, ie the mode of normal forward movement, when the gearbox selects and shifts the desired speed by itself.
Operating modes L, 1, 2, 3
In older automatic cars you will often find modes L, 1, 2, 3 or D1, D2, D3.
L mode is low gear, so the lowest gear. In some cars it is also marked as 1. In this mode, the transmission will always only use first gear without shifting. This method of forced downshifting can be useful in a variety of situations, such as towing a heavy trailer, engine braking when driving downhill, when driving uphill, and in difficult conditions such as mud or snow.
Modes 2, 3, (D2, D3), (sometimes 4) are options to force the top gear to be limited to XNUMXnd, XNUMXrd or XNUMXth gear. In such modes, the transmission will only shift up to the gear you select.
For example, if you select 3, it will shift between XNUMXst, XNUMXnd and XNUMXrd gears as needed, but will never shift into XNUMXth. These modes are also required for special road conditions – say when driving in winter, etc.
Mode B
Mode B is engine braking. The letter B is found on some cars, mainly Japanese, and is useful under the same conditions as L (1), 2 or 3 modes described above in an automatic transmission, with the only difference being that B mode can be engaged at any speed , and the box itself will select the desired gear for engine braking and will not be limited to only a few speeds. You will benefit most from B mode on long descents, where there is a risk of the brakes overheating.
O/D (Overdrive) or O/D OFF mode
O/D or O/D OFF mode is Overdrive and is usually found on older cars, although it can also be found on very rare, fairly new models. Overdrive itself is a driving mode that is diametrically opposed to mode B. It serves to save fuel when you drive constantly at high speeds, because the transmission will "prefer" to select the highest gear.
S mode
Mode S stands for Sport. What the transmission will do in this way may vary from car to car, but the gist is the same – it will allow you to use the engine's potential more efficiently, use lower gears for lively driving, rev the engine more and achieve better engine braking when decelerating. In some models, with S mode, the gear shift itself is faster, but often less comfortable. You can use S mode all the time, if you want to drive more lively, or occasionally – for example, when overtaking.
M mode
M mode is manual. In this selector position, the driver has the option of manual gear shifting. How gears are changed depends on the car model, but is most often done by moving the gear lever back and forth or the paddles behind the steering wheel.
There are also versions with buttons on the steering wheel or on the gear lever itself, but such solutions appear mainly in old cars. This mode gives you better control of the car. However, it should be noted that most cars still limit the control options in manual mode: for example, the transmission will automatically shift to a higher gear when the engine speed limit is reached, or it will not shift to a lower/higher gear. if the engine rpm does not correspond to the required gear ratio.
W or * mode
W or * mode (snowflake icon) is winter mode, ie. winter mode. It was quite common twenty years ago, but we rarely find it in new cars. In it, the automatic transmission does not use first gear and the vehicle starts from a stop in second gear to avoid wheel slippage. Also, shifting to higher gears occurs at lower speeds In winter mode, you can drive not only in winter, but also in other situations where a softer start from a stop can be useful. For example, when trying to carefully get off a slippery surface like mud or wet grass. Winter mode is usually not activated by the selector position, but by an additional button next to the automatic transmission selector. /Telegraph/
