EU says it is in Kosovo's interest to form institutions as soon as possible

The European Union said it is in Kosovo's interest to quickly form its institutions.

EU Enlargement Spokesperson Guillaume Mercier said on Thursday, April 24, that the rapid formation of Kosovo's institutions is important in fulfilling European reforms and moving forward on this path.

"What I can say is that it is in Kosovo's interest to quickly form the institutions, which is very important in fulfilling European reforms and moving forward on this path. It is also important for other issues, such as the Growth Plan, as you know, the Kosovo Parliament must be constituted to continue the work in this direction," Mercier declared when asked whether the failure to constitute the Assembly has consequences for Kosovo's relations with the EU, KP reports.

Kosovo cannot receive the first payments from the Growth Plan until the funds and credit agreement with the European Union is ratified in the Assembly. International agreements are ratified by a two-thirds vote.

The Kosovo Assembly failed to be constituted for the fifth time on Wednesday, April 23.

MPs will gather again on Friday, April 25, in another attempt to vote for the speaker of parliament.

This process has stalled after the Vetëvendosje Movement – the first party to emerge from the February 9 elections – failed to secure the 61 votes needed to elect Albulena Haxhiu as Speaker of the Assembly.

The parties that were in opposition until now do not support Haxhiu's name for this position, while the LVV has stated that they are not changing the proposal.
