Salt is an important part of your diet when taken in moderate amounts. It is an electrolyte that makes it key to maintaining homeostasis in the body, allowing many bodily functions to run smoothly and sustainably.

It also helps balance fluids and minerals, and helps control muscle movement. If we don't have enough sodium, we crave it. Sodium also contains no calories, which is why it can seem like a good addition to your food, adding extra flavor to your meals.

However, excessive amounts of sodium can lead to negative consequences. One of these effects is a possible increase in the risk of heart disease. If you are at risk for heart disease or have heart disease, you should control the amount of sodium you get. According to a new study published in The Lancet Journal, reducing sodium intake may help prevent fluid overload and adverse outcomes for patients with heart failure.

In the study, the experts took information from an international survey that included patients over 18 years old who were located in 26 locations in six different countries. These patients had chronic heart failure and received optimal tolerable medical treatment according to guidelines – the most favorable dose of medication or treatment that does not cause unacceptable side effects. Patients were randomized to routine treatment according to local guidelines or to a low-sodium diet of less than 100 millimoles (mmol) per day.

The researchers then designed a dietary intervention study to test whether reducing dietary sodium reduced the incidence of future clinical events. After the study, they found that hospitalizations caused by cardiovascular disease occurred two percent less in patients on a low-sodium diet compared to patients on a diet with the usual amount of sodium.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, limiting sodium in your diet helps reduce the amount of extra fluid around the heart, lungs and legs. If you have excess fluid in your body, it makes your heart work harder. This will potentially increase blood pressure. /Telegraph/
