The important thing is to consume it in great moderation, so as not to risk a long series of diseases, including hypertension, kidney and heart problems.

Used properly, it is a source of great benefits and has a curative, cleansing and even cosmetic and antiaging action.


What is it – A salt is a chemical compound in which two or more ions are bonded to a molecule within a crystalline lattice. Salts can be very different from each other: there are organic or inorganic, simple or complex and can make up different chemical compounds.

Some salts are soluble in water, others are not, others dissolve in other substances. What we know best is common salt, whose scientific name is sodium chloride, to indicate that one of its molecules is composed of one chlorine atom and one sodium atom. Therefore, it is only one of the many types of existing salts, but it has a very important role for the proper functioning of our body.

What is it for? – One of the characteristics that makes salt fundamental is its ability to transmit nerve impulses, regulate blood pressure and exchange fluids. This is why all organisms have, in tissues and fluids, a certain presence of salt.

In medicine, when a patient needs to be hydrated, a physiological solution containing a certain percentage of salt is used. Important, to keep ourselves healthy, we must not exceed it with consumption: The maximum dose recommended in the kitchen is five grams per day, or the amount found in a teaspoon.

Each its own color - Salt can take on different colors depending on the minerals that enter its chemical composition. Sea salt is the one we know and use the most: it usually has a white color and small, fine grains; it is widely used in the kitchen to flavor or preserve food.

Always among the sea salts, it is worth mentioning flour de sel (or flower salt) is a type of French sea salt, characteristic of southern Britain, but also of the Camargue, with a delicate aroma, which is used for raw food.

Persian blue salt is a natural rock salt from the salt mines of Iran; rare and precious, with an intense tenderness and a slightly spicy taste. Its color is due to a mineral called sylvinite.

Pink Himalayan salt has a very high content of natural minerals that make it the richest and most complete in the world; it has a delicate taste that does not cover the flavors of other foods, but accompanies and enhances them.

Also very popular is the gray salt of Britain of ancient origin, its characteristic color is due to the presence of clays that enrich it with many minerals.

Alaea red salt owes its color to the presence of iron. Meanwhile, black is Hawaiian salt, low in sodium and rich in plant carbons with known cleansing properties. A carbon-rich plant black salt is Cyprus black salt.

For beauty – Salt in cosmetics turns into a great ally of beauty. Two spoons of salt dissolved in one liter of water, massaging on your face are useful for gently cleansing the skin and improving its elasticity.

Dead Sea salts, added to bath water or used in scrubs, are effective in combating water retention and cellulite. Water and salt residues and finishes can also be used to combat retention.

Healing efficacy - Water has been used since ancient times as a disinfectant and anti-inflammatory. A kilogram and a half of salt in the bath water has a soothing effect on irritated skin and in case of insect bites. The same result was obtained by applying gauze soaked in water and salt to the insect bite.

A teaspoon of sea salt in a glass of warm water is useful for rinsing in case of inflamed gums and bad breath. With two spoons of salt dissolved in a pot of very hot water, useful compounds are prepared to free the airways for colds.

For the house – Salt can be useful in the kitchen to clean dirty dishes from grease: just put some salt and wipe them with a paper towel.

A pinch of salt in the glasses is useful for removing stubborn tea or coffee stains, while adding a little salt to the water in which you pour the eggs makes them easier to soak.
