Disc prices increase

During this quarter, price increases are expected for drives that OEM manufacturers integrate into new computers. Prices in the retail network have already increased by 10 to 15 percent, and the 5 to 10 percent increase should now also occur in the OEM segment.

The reason is the lack of controllers for the motors that move the plates on the disks, the largest manufacturer of which is the Texas Instruments (TI) company. The company has had production interruptions in three factories in Japan as a result of the devastating earthquake that hit this remote country, while only STMicroelectronics competes in this segment.

IT expects new shipments from Japanese factories to arrive only in September of this year, so in the meantime, shortages of controllers are also expected, which are also used by Western Digital and Seagate. /Telegraph/
