Elon Musk's flagship project arrives in Puerto Rico

Elon Musk's efforts to restore electricity to Puerto Rico are taking shape. A new shipment of Tesla Powerpack battery systems has arrived on the island, days after the CEO spoke with Governor Ricardo Rossello about using the company's technology to restore the hurricane-ravaged power grid.

Rossello said Puerto Rico had the potential to become a "side project" for Tesla, a high-profile demonstration of the company's scaling of batteries and solar power systems.

José Valiente shared an image with Electrek of Tesla Powerpacks lined up at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico. The images, published on Sunday, show Powerpacks arriving, ready for delivery to keep the grid powered.

While the Tesla Powerwall stores about 13.5 kilowatt-hours of energy, aimed at a home installation, the Powerpack has 210 kilowatt-hours and is intended for use with renewable energy sources to ensure a continuous supply of energy even when not generating electricity. The giant packages, stored in large gray covers, cut an imposing figure.
