​Prisoners with mental health problems, space is discussed

Leaders of justice institutions have dealt with the aspect of creating psychiatric spaces for those judged to the extent of compulsory psychiatric treatment with detention in health institutions.

The Minister of Justice, Albulena Haxhiu, together with the Deputy Minister Blerim Sallahu and the Minister of Health, Arben Vitia, have met the head of the KGjK, Albert Zogaj, the head of the KPK, Jetish Maloku, and other representatives from the Institute of Forensic Psychiatry, to discuss offering an acceptable solution for the treatment and establishment of pardons to whom the court has imposed the measure of compulsory psychiatric treatment with detention in Health Institutions.

According to an announcement by the MoD, based on the fact that the Competent Courts in certain cases issue an ordinance for mandatory psychiatric treatment of prisoners with mental health problems and in the absence of capacity in the relevant health facilities, the Ministry of Justice in the medium-term budget framework has planned the expansion of existing capacities, but urgent solutions are required until the finalization of the project.

"During the meeting with representatives of the relevant institutions, it was proposed to secure separate spaces within the Department of Psychiatry at KKUK until the permanent solution of the problem. Ministers Haxhiu and Vitia expressed their commitment to provide their support in the implementation of the project to solve the problem, namely the creation of sufficient spaces for the persons against whom such a measure is imposed by the competent courts", the announcement states.
