People have just realized they've been pronouncing the name Mercedes wrong all their lives

Mercedes is one of the most iconic, well-known brands in the world, but it turns out that many people are pronouncing its name wrong.

The German brand is synonymous with style, history and innovation.

The luxury car company was founded in 1926 by four people – Karl Benz, Gottlieb Daimler, Wilhelm Maybach and Emil Jellinek.

Mercedes was created after Emil Jellinek was inspired by his daughter's name.

The company then went on to become one of the most famous brands across the globe – but that doesn't mean everyone has mastered the correct pronunciation of its name, Telegraph reports.

In a recent study, Britons were asked to correctly pronounce the names of 30 of the most popular car manufacturers, as well as recognize their logos.

Mercedes was found to be among the hardest brands to pronounce with only 20% of Brits using an authentic pronunciation, while most referred to it as "Mer-say-deez".

The test accepted both the Spanish pronunciation "Mer-th-eh-des Benz" as well as the more common German pronunciation "Mer-say-dez Benz" as correct.

But many people can't agree on the correct pronunciation of the legendary brand, with one person turning to Reddit for guidance.

"Help me. I say Merseydays. I don't know where I heard it. F1 commentators say Mersaydees on TV. Does anyone have any recordings of the previous pronunciation?” he said.

One person replied: "Mair-they-dayth", while another said "Mur - Say - Deez" and a third said that "The correct German way to pronounce it is Mertz-saydez".

Popular account Historic Vids shared a video discussing the creation of the legendary brand name and simply wrote: “Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius reveals how the name Mercedes came about.

The video confirmed the story of Jellinek's desire to honor his daughter's name.

Otherwise, the company's logo proves that, despite any confusion over the correct pronunciation of the name, the brand still boasts impressive recognition. /Telegraph/
