New technology: Tires detect and brake on slippery roads

At this year's CES, Goodyear demonstrated innovative smart tire technology that should contribute to road safety.

In collaboration with the Dutch research organization TNO, Goodyear has developed tires with integrated sensors that can detect slippery and dangerous road conditions and cooperate with advanced assistance systems in cars.

This technology, otherwise called SightLine, is designed to improve automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems.

By detecting road obstacles and dangerous conditions, the system can brake earlier, reducing the risk of a crash.

Goodyear says that this technology enables the vehicle to stop more safely even on slippery surfaces such as roads wet from rain, snow or ice, and that the system is effective at speeds up to 80 km/h.

Goodyear introduced this technology for the first time in 2021, as a set of innovative solutions that allow tires to monitor pressure, analyze the level of friction between the tire and the road and detect tire wear.

“The technology is available and it's really just a continuation of some other projects we've been working on for a few years. Success would be if automakers come to us and ask us to help them meet regulations,” said Chris Helsel, Goodyear's vice president of global innovation and chief technology officer.

It is not yet known when the technology will be available. /Telegraph/
