Natural increase in Albania, 10 percent more deaths in 2021

Albania reported 3,296 more deaths than births in 2021, as births fell and deaths rose compared to the previous year.

According to INSTAT, the country has had a positive natural increase in the population in recent years, even though high immigration has led to a decrease in the population.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to the natural decrease during 2021.


During the year, 27,284 babies were born with a decrease of 2.8 percent compared to 2020. Meanwhile, there were 30,580 deaths or an increase of 10.8 percent compared to the previous year.

The district with the lowest number of deaths is Kukësi with 612, while Tirana has the highest number with 7,831 deaths.

The largest decrease in the percentage of deaths during 2021 is in Kukësi with a decrease of 2.4 percent, while the largest increase is in Vlora with 33.2 percent. /Telegraph/
