Gaza cease-fire deal 'on the brink,' says Biden in final foreign policy speech

A deal on Gaza is "on the brink," President Joe Biden said in his latest foreign policy address.

The outgoing US president said it would include a deal to release hostages and an "increase" in aid to the Palestinians.

"So many innocent people have been killed, so many communities have been destroyed. The Palestinian people deserve peace," he said, the Telegraph reports.

Biden was giving his final foreign policy speech before leaving office next week.

Monday's speech will be the penultimate time he speaks before the end of his presidency. He will give a farewell speech on Wednesday.

American and Arab mediators made significant progress overnight toward brokering a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war and the release of scores of hostages held in the Gaza Strip — but a deal has yet to be reached, officials said.

A round of ceasefire talks will be held in Doha on Tuesday to finalize remaining details on a Gaza ceasefire deal - including the release of up to 33 hostages - the officials added.
