For more than a week, mass protests continue in Chile, which culminated on Friday with about a million citizens protesting in the capital Santiago.

At least 19 people have died and hundreds more have been injured during a week of protests, which were sparked by a rise in the price of subway tickets, and then turned into a mass demonstration of dissatisfaction with the deep inequality that has stuck one of the richest countries in Latin America.

The protesters demand at all costs the resignation of President Sebastian Pinera, but the latter has decided to dismiss only the ministers, but not to leave the post himself.

And yet, what stands out is that the central figure of these protests is the Joker, the character played by Joaquin Phoenix in the film of the same title.

The movie Joker is about a marginalized clown who commits a series of murders of people in power and who come from the rich class. These murders then cause unrest in the country, with citizens feeling violated and powerless against the wealthy class of society.

With nearly $800 million collected from worldwide ticket sales, Joker has practically broken records. The film has so far collected over 260 million dollars in the US.

It is this character that is being used by thousands of young protesters in Chile. They often appear with the face of the Joker drawn, or have placed his image on banners.

The image of the Joker also appeared in the recent anti-government protests in Lebanon, a country in the Middle East. /Telegraph/
