The tragic life of Victor Hugo. Early death, love, pain, madness...

Victor Hugo (Victor Marie Hugo) was born on February 26, 1802, almost 13 years after the outbreak of the French Revolution. He was the genius of his time and of all times. The honors of the death ceremony (May 22, 1885) were performed under the Arc de Triomphe and he was buried in the Panthéon in Paris accompanied by a procession of two million souls.

He is the father of French literature, it is not enough to count his works in many fields as a poet, playwright, novelist, romantic inspiration, designer, participant in the Franco-Prussian conflict, deputy, senator, holder of the Legion of Honor and the name of a street in Paris. Even his last words: "Ceci est le combat du jour et de la nuit... Je vois de la lumiere noire" (it is the fight of the day and the night... I see the black light) are still repeated today in schools when they study the turbulent life and his work: 13 plays for the theater, nine novels, 28 volumes of poetry, 15 essays and even drawings and photographs, late passions but no less strong.

Opposed Napoleon, opposed the death penalty and was in favor of women's rights. The French Second Empire sentenced him to exile for two decades. He defended the renewal of the education system and the aristocratic laws. He entered the hearts of the people with two of his monuments: "Paris Cathedral" and "Les Miserables".

In the elections of February 8, 1871, the monarchs come to power, but the people deny this kind of change and a bloody and quite famous revolt breaks out, the "Paris Commune". Before this repression against the Communards, Viktor Hygo wrote: "Some thugs killed 64 hostages... and we responded by killing 6000 prisoners!"

But the bird of misfortune came around... On October 12, 1822, he married Adele Foucher, a childhood friend and several years older than him. A year ago, his mother, Sophie Trébuchet, had died, a death that had shocked him a lot. Five children were born from the marriage, Léopold, Leopoldine, Charles, François-Victor and Adele. The first son survives only three months. Leopoldine dies before turning 5. Charles dies at the age of 20 and Francois-Victor at the same age as Charles. These are not merciful deaths at all. Leopoldine falls from the boat in the Seine, she does not know how to swim, her husband jumps into the water to save her and they both drown. Charles died of tuberculosis, François-Victor of cancer.

As for Adela, the sole survivor spends her days in a mental hospital because of unrequited love. Another shot again. Eugene, Victor Hygoi's brother was also in love with Adele Foucher and when they got married he went crazy and ended up in a madhouse.

The disasters were not over yet. Exiled by Napoleon III, he met Juliette Drouet, married to a sculptor and then a lover of a millionaire who had taken him first to Germany and later to Brussels. The first night of love happened in February 1833, the date Victor Hugo used in "Les Miserables" for the wedding of Marius and Cosette.

The indomitable Don Juan did not stop flirting, and Adele punished him with a romance of her own with the literary critic Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve, an admirer of Hugo. Adele Foucher died at the age of 46 in the arms of Victor Hugo, who continued to be Juliette Drouet's lifelong lover until his death on May 22, 1885. Juliette Drouet had died two years earlier of cancer. . Hygoi did not go to his funeral, but wrote on the back of a photo these words: "50 years of love. It was one of the most beautiful marriages".

Beyond the political events, the writings, the tragedies of his children, the madness of his only surviving daughter and his brother, beyond his loves, they did not happen by chance. Romantics, devout believers of tragic fates, shadows, cypresses surrounding cemeteries, of course graves, terrible omens, sadness, melancholy never believed in light, in happiness as well as in joy. And Viktor Hygoi eternally fulfilled this decalogue, this rule of the game, this punishment, this labyrinth with no way out. /Theworldnews.net/bota.al/
