It cost them dearly to update the terms: WhatsApp lost millions of users due to the new terms

Due to a very poor terms of service update, millions of WhatsApp users have left that platform and switched to alternatives like Signal and Telegram.

The abandonment of the platform was so great that WhatsApp had to postpone the implementation of the new conditions, which were planned for February 8, to May 15, in order to explain to users the changes that are being made, writes The Guardian.

During the first three weeks of January, messaging platform Signal gained 7.5 million new users worldwide and Telegram 25, while WhatsApp fell from eighth to 12th most downloaded in the UK on January 12. Telegraph reports.

On the other hand, Signal on January 6 was not even among the first 1000 most downloaded apps, and on January 9 it reached the 1st place.

WhatsApp's director of public policy for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Niam Sweeney, told the Home Affairs Committee that she believes the exodus is related to the company's terms of service update.

As he explained, the update was supposed to enable a new set of tools around business messaging and provide greater transparency around existing privacy policies.

"We want to make it clear that the update will not affect the privacy of messaging with friends and family in any way," WhatsApp said. /Telegraph/
