The former Everton star who played with Wayne Rooney is sentenced to 20 years in prison

A former Everton player who played with Wayne Rooney has been jailed for 20 years, according to recent reports.

It is about Li Tie, a footballer who has 40 appearances for the English club and who later transferred to Sheffield United, who has received this punishment from a court in China.

The former selector of the Chinese national team has been found guilty of giving and receiving bribes for 11.9 million euros between 2015 and 2021, as reported by state media this Friday.

He had been under investigation since 2022 for serious violations of the law, it has been reported The Independent.

It comes as the Chinese government stepped up its efforts to crack down on corruption in Chinese football, with hundreds of Chinese Football Association officials investigated or convicted.

During the month of March, the former head of the Chinese national team, Chen Xuyuan, was sentenced to life imprisonment for bribes of 8.7 million euros.

Li is one of the most famous footballers in China and had represented his country in 92 matches, including an appearance at the 2002 World Cup.

He then took charge of China, but there it is suspected that he had selected some special players to invite, in exchange for a sum of money of 5.4 million euros.

The 47-year-old then admitted that he had arranged around 300 euros to keep his position in the national team, while he was also accused of match-fixing while he was the coach of Hebei China Fortune and Wuhan Zall./Telegraph/
