After every major update, we scan devices for new features. However, some have noticed an unpleasant surprise in the form of an “Unknown Part” message after updating to iOS 18.5.
Although it seems confusing and alarming to many people, this message has a logical explanation. This feature is not new - Apple introduced checking for parts that were not installed at the factory with iOS 15.2 in 2021, reports Telegraph.
However, many users are now noticing this for the first time because iOS 18.5 is apparently checking components more aggressively than before.
The “Unknown Part” message means that your iPhone can’t recognize all the parts it had when it was new. This doesn’t automatically mean you’re using fake or defective parts, but it does indicate that the device has either been opened for service or contains replacement components that aren’t Apple-certified.
The most common reason is replacing parts that are not genuine Apple parts. In such cases, the iPhone will not be able to identify them as official, which can result in the loss of some features, such as the True Tone display, Touch ID, Face ID, or the display of battery status information.
Interestingly, the message can also appear if genuine Apple parts were installed, but not at an authorized service center. This often happens when independent repair shops use parts from other damaged devices. It is then necessary to manually calibrate the replaced part via an option in the device settings.
In rare cases, if you purchased a new iPhone in a sealed box and receive this message, it could be the result of a software bug or even a sign that the device has been previously opened or serviced without authorization. In this case, it is recommended that you return the device immediately if you are still within the warranty or return period.
The solution depends on your specific situation. If you installed a genuine part but not from an Apple service center, you should go to Settings > General > About > Parts & Service, tap Complete Repair, and follow the onscreen instructions. Finally, you will need to restart your device so that the new component is properly recognized.
If you see an Activation Lock warning when trying to calibrate, it means that Apple has protected the accessory because it suspects the part came from a stolen device. In this case, the only solution is to return to the service center and have another, undetected part installed.
Unfortunately, if you have used third-party parts that are not genuine Apple parts, the “Unknown Part” message will most likely remain present forever. In these cases, the iPhone will lose some functionality that can only be restored by installing the original components.
While the “Unknown Part” message may seem alarming, in most cases it doesn’t mean your iPhone is at risk. If you use quality parts from reputable manufacturers, your device will operate safely, albeit perhaps with limited functionality.
The most important thing is to avoid dubious services and parts of unknown origin, and if you want full compatibility, always choose official Apple services or original components. /Telegraph/
