Imamoglu in video address about his arrest: We are facing great violence

Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was arrested today on corruption charges.

He has already reacted via social media by sharing a video as he was about to be arrested by Turkish police.

"I regret to say that my dear police officers, who are trying to rob the will of the people, using the security forces of this country for this mistreatment, have placed hundreds of police officers in front of the doors of the homes of 16 million Istanbul residents," initially claimed one of the opposition leaders in Turkey.

"We are facing great violence. But I want you to know that I will not give up. I love you all very much, I have surrendered myself into the hands of the people. Let everyone know that I will remain strong. I will continue to fight against that person and all that thought that used this process as a device," the 53-year-old is heard asserting.

Turkish authorities arrested President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's main political rival on Wednesday on charges including corruption and aiding a terrorist group, in what the main opposition party called "an attempted coup against our future president."

The move against Ekrem Imamoglu, the popular mayor of Istanbul, appears to cap a months-long aggressive legal crackdown on opposition figures across the country, which has been criticized as a politicized attempt to silence dissent. /Telegraph/
