The National Institute of Public Health of Kosovo (NIPHK) has announced that after recent rainfall, problems with drinking water have been warned in several regions, on Wednesday, 07.01.2026.

According to the National Institute of Public Health and Water Resources, in the Pristina region, the water plants in Shkabaj and Bivolak are not functional due to high turbidity, while the systems in Badovc and Batllavë are operating normally and there are currently no problems with the quality of the water in the network.

In the Prizren region, it is said that the water from the "40 wells" is used only for sanitary needs and is not safe for drinking, while in other sources such as Cvilen and Soz, it is safe.

In Suhareka and Malisheva, it is reported that the network water should not be used for drinking, while in Dragash the situation appears stable.

In the Gjilan/Gnjilane region, drinking water is said to be OK in the city of Gjilan/Gnjilane, but in the village of Berivojcë/Berivojca in Kamenica/Kamenica, elevated nitrates have been observed and the water is not recommended for drinking. In Viti/Viti, the supply has been interrupted due to turbidity.

In the Peja region, it is reported that turbulence has been observed in several sources, with supply interruptions in Deçan and in the Jarina area of Klina. In Peja, supply from the Radac source has resumed normally.

According to the announcement, drinking water in Ferizaj and Gjakova is safe, while in some local sources in the Gjakova region the water should not be used for drinking.

The institute also announces that in the Mitrovica region, water is still not safe for consumption due to high turbidity and will not be released for drinking for a certain period.

NIPHK recommends that citizens boil water from unprotected wells before use, use only safe sources, and follow official instructions from institutions in their municipalities.

"Citizens who are supplied with water from unprotected wells (for reasons of bacteriological safety), are recommended to boil the water before use or to use alternative sources for safe water supply. Food should be stored in safe places and food that has been in contact with rainwater should not be consumed. Use water only from safe sources," the public announcement states.
