He hugged Chancellor Olaf Scholz – now he has to pay a fine of 4500 euros

A German court has convicted a man for joining the escort of then-Chancellor Olaf Scholz in 2023 and hugging him as he prepared to board a plane in Frankfurt.

The 50-year-old man was sentenced to a fine of 4500 euros and a driving ban for two and a half years for endangering road traffic, the German news agency DPA reports.

The man's name has not been published, as it violates German privacy rules, the newspaper writes. dw.

The hug was the reason for an investigation by Scholz's security service after the German chancellor was injured.

The hug occurred during Scholz's return to Berlin after celebrating the 25th anniversary of the European Central Bank.

The outgoing chancellor's office said he "did not feel threatened at any time."

The defendant was under the influence of drugs and is only partially responsible. He has apologized for his actions. /Telegraph/
