Great interest in IVF service at UCCK

With the operationalization of the Medically Assisted Fertilization service at the University Clinical Center of Kosovo, interest in this service is very high. Since the end of last year when this medical method was inaugurated, 255 consultations have been performed, while another 470 are pending.

This was announced by the head of the Infertility Department at the Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic, Leandrit Bejtullahu. He told KosovaPress that the waiting time for these checks is 5 to 7 days.

"There has been a lot of interest, which we have been waiting for... Initially, we are in the phase of selecting patients to see for whom the in vitro fertilization method is appropriate. So far, 255 consultations have been conducted and we have 470 with specific appointments, the waiting time is quite short, somewhere between 5 and 7 days, so there is no long wait. From these cases, we need to select those who qualify for the procedure, as there are certain criteria," he emphasized.

Gynecologist Bejtullahu has shown that with their own cells, the IVF process at UCCK can be performed on women up to the age of 42. Meanwhile, cases from 42 to 45 years old are treated through the second-degree commission.

"Since we currently do not have the opportunity to work with donor cells, the age of patients will be limited. The age will be limited to 42 years, and from 42 to 45, we will go from case to case, depending on the possibilities. They will certainly go through the second-instance commission to see how well they meet the conditions. Otherwise, in most countries the limitation is at the age of 42 when it comes to working with own cells. This is not discrimination based on the age of the patients, it is in the best interest of the patients," he emphasized.

Speaking about the successes of this method, the head of the IVF department at the Gynecology Clinic, Leandrit Bejtullahu, stated that after the age of 40, the success rate of bringing children to life through this method significantly decreases.

"The success of IVF is when with this procedure the patient becomes pregnant and carries the child to term and gives birth to a living child. At even younger ages, up to 35 years, the success rate is 44%. It is not the success rate as reported or misunderstood, which is 60,70, 80, 40%. After the age of 43, the number drops significantly from 5 to 44%, in fact, by 45, XNUMX, it is no longer reasonable to use your own cells because the success rate drops significantly," Bejtullahu declared.

The head of the IVF department at the Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic, Leandrit Bejtullahu, emphasized that for the first two cycles this service will be offered free of charge, while the third time will have a price of over 600 euros.

On December 24, 2024, the medically assisted reproduction service was inaugurated at UCCK.

At the beginning of October last year, the Minister of Health, Arben Vitia, announced that the medicines necessary for this medical procedure had been included in the List of Essential Medicines.
