Fruits and vegetables that can help improve vision and reduce damage to your eyes

Our bodies begin to deteriorate as we age – the eyes are no exception.

Although vision loss is a natural process that cannot necessarily be prevented, our diets can make a difference in the health of our eyes.

Experts suggest that there are two foods that can help reduce and slow age-related vision loss.

Here are the fruits and vegetables that can protect your vision from age-related problems – and how exactly they can help your eyes – according to Specsavers optometrist Dr. Nigel Best.

What fruits and vegetables reduce vision loss?

Dr. Best explains that foods like peppers and kiwi can be really good for our health, especially the eyes. Both of these foods are rich in zeaxanthis and lutein – the main chemical components found in the human eye – which can reduce your vision problems.

"Kiwifruit is not only high in antioxidants, it's high in fiber, but it's also full of vitamin C and vitamin E," he said, adding that peppers "give you the most vitamin C per calorie."

Dr. Best advised that three servings of kiwi a day could reduce the risk of age-related eye problems by 36 percent, also recommending that we eat peppers raw as cooking them reduces vitamin C levels.

He further explained the importance of vitamin C, saying: “The reason why vitamin C is so important is because it helps form collagen – a protein that contributes to the structure of our eyes. /Telegraph/
