Influenza and Covid-19 increased respiratory infections in Albania by 25%

Public health management institutions in Albania were put under pressure this year by the effects of the flu and Covid-19 on the spread of respiratory infections.

Data from the Institute of Public Health show that the trends of respiratory infections were high during the months of January-February-March of this year compared to 2022, Monitor reports.

Viruses became more aggressive in February this year. In the second week of 2024, a total of over 17,600 people affected by upper and lower respiratory infections were counted, from about 14 cases that were counted in the same period last year.

During February and March 2024, respiratory infections each week were about 25 percent higher than the same period in 2023.

Doctors at the Polyclinic of Lung Diseases in Tirana claim that this season, the flu was the strongest after the Covid-19 pandemic. In the years 2021-2022 and 2023 after the waves of Covid-19, viruses were less aggressive. But this year, both Covid-19 and seasonal flu circulated, causing many affected to need more in-depth treatment.

Doctors explain that this virus was somewhat unusual because it lasted longer than the usual flu. The symptoms have kept the patients for almost two weeks, where high temperature, bone pain and strong cough have dominated. The highest frequency of respiratory infections caused by influenza was in children up to 4 years old.

The flu has been more aggressive among the elderly, causing even higher mortality than last year, while among children it has increased the need for more hospitalizations.

Along with the flu, Covid-19 has been circulating. In December 2023, the Institute of Public Health reported that officially 257 cases were confirmed with Covid-19, in November 293 cases, while in September there were more cases. Since only symptomatic cases were buffered, the virus circulated more widely. Official data confirm that during the period October-December 2023, 9 people lost their lives from Covid-19.

The data show that Covid-19 has circulated mostly with symptoms in the elderly. According to ISHP, in October, the most affected age group was 65-74 years old with an incidence of 127.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by the 75+ age group with an incidence of 108.34 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Data from laboratories show that Covid-19 circulated intensively even in 2024. Managers of medical laboratories claim that the cases of confirmed Covid-19 patients have increased after the tampon was performed. /Telegraph/
