FIRST MEMORY

Poem by: Mirza Pinjić
Translated by: Fadil Bajraj

I'm playing through my memories.
First from the third year of life:

Grandma's wire-covered chicken coop
whose tenants we are
Dad plucked the falcon and let it fly.
While I suck the fulmars and fear the claws of stone

Grandma said
Traumatized chickens don't lay eggs

The mother is missing from this picture.
She bent over the stove
where he tries to make something out of nothing
for breakfast, lunch and dinner
