Everything ready, Italian media: Gjadri welcomes the first asylum seekers within the week

Italian media report that the work has been completed for the immigrant centers in Albania, which, as foreseen in the agreement between the two governments, will be under Italian jurisdiction. The Gjadri camp, the first reception area in the port of Shengjin, was ready and was delivered on Wednesday for testing.

A center for the stay of asylum seekers with 880 places, a hospital center with 144 places and a prison with 20 places have been built in it.

Within a week, the premises will be opened to accommodate the first persons who will be subject to accelerated border procedures, writes A2.

The agreement signed last year by the Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Meloni and the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama will last for 5 years while it foresees that Albania will host thousands of asylum seekers on behalf of Italy, up to 3 thousand immigrants taken by the Italian Coast Guard in international waters every month.

The centers will only accommodate adult men. People considered vulnerable women, children, the elderly and those who are ill or victims of torture will be sheltered in Italy. Families will also not be separated. Those sent to Albania will retain their right under international and European Union law to apply for asylum in Italy and have their claims processed there.

With each request taking about a month to process, the number of people sent to Albania can reach 36 in a year.
