"I had calculated that there would be some problems, but the Italy-Albania cooperation protocol for immigration will work." This is what Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on the 80th anniversary of the founding of the conservative Rome newspaper "Il Tempo".
Referring to the centers for immigrants that her country has set up in the north of Albania, Meloni emphasized that she will not allow this model to be dismantled, because some politicians do not agree with it.
"I will not allow the model we have created, with full respect for Italian and European law, to be dismantled, because some politicians do not agree with it and with the way we should manage immigration. I am determined to move forward," said Meloni.
According to her, "the decision that returned the emigrants from Albania is unreasonable and dictated by a vision very different from that of the government".
"The judges refer to a decision of the European Court, but the ignorance of those irregular immigrants started much earlier. One of the judges had publicly declared his opposition to the Italy-Albania protocol. If those migrants had stayed in Lampedusa or been sent to some center in Italy, there would have been the same result. The Italy-Albania protocol can objectively change the management of flows", continued the Italian Prime Minister.
Asked if the construction of camps in Albania has caused damage to the state budget, Meloni answered briefly: "For those who wanted the superbonus, no."
