Devices are placed in patients' hearts indefinitely

The Cardiology Clinic at KKUK has placed re-sterilized electrodes in the hearts of patients after the deadline had expired.

Also, pacemakers purchased by taxpayers that are close to expiration are being planned to be re-sterilized, not thrown in the trash. But the manufacturer of pacemakers "Medtronic" warns that those devices are for single use and cannot be re-sterilized.

The Cardiology Clinic at the University Clinical Center of Kosovo has sterilized them in order to use ten electrodes that are placed in pacemakers (heart stimulators), which have expired. Sterilization is done so that they can be used to perform cardiac stimulation in patients with heart disease.

Ten of the 19 electrodes have been sterilized, while another nine are left to be sterilized in the near term and also placed in patients who have heart problems.

The monetary value of these expired devices is around 9 euros, while a number of pacemakers, which have been in stock for a long time, are close to expiration.

The newspaper "Zëri" has done a research of several weeks regarding the orders made by KKUK, based on the contract for "Supply of pacemakers and electrodes of the manufacturer 'Medtronic'", which in Kosovo is represented by the company "Yess Pharma".
