Details of Germany's "big package" of arms for Ukraine are revealed

German military aid to be sent to Ukraine in December includes IRIS-T air defense systems, Leopard 1 tanks and armed drones, a defense ministry spokesman said.

"Winter is near, so there will be winter equipment, as well as handguns and heating equipment", the spokesman said, foreign media write, Telegrafi reports.

A government spokesman said the shipments were part of a military aid package announced by Berlin in October.

We remind you that Chancellor Olaf Scholz is visiting Ukraine for the first time in more than two years.

His visit comes just weeks after he was criticized by Volodymyr Zelensky for a phone call with Russia's Vladimir Putin.

"In my meeting with President Zelensky, I will announce additional armaments worth 650 million euros, which will be delivered in December," the chancellor was quoted as saying.

According to him, Ukraine can rely even further on Germany.

"We say what we do. And we do what we say", said Scholz further.

But what do we know about these systems?

The IRIS-T systems are manufactured by Diehl Defense, based in southern Germany, and provide medium-range, high-altitude coverage for small towns and armies.

Each system consists of a missile launcher, a radar and a fire control radar – and the missiles are said to have a range of 40 kilometers.

Leopard 1 tanks were Germany's first post-war tank and most of these vehicles have been variously upgraded.

Tanks can deliver accurate hits at a range of up to 4 kilometers. /Telegraph/
