Countries with confirmed cases of the new type of monkeypox

The UK has become the fifth country outside Africa to report a case of the clade Ib variant of monkeypox.

The World Health Organization declared mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years in August, after an outbreak of the viral infection in the Democratic Republic of Congo spread to neighboring countries.

Below are the countries with confirmed cases of the clade Ib variant of mpox:


Germany

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for public health has announced that the first case of the new mpox variant has been detected in Germany, adding that the risk to the general population is low.

Great Britain

The UK Health Safety Agency (UKHSA) has announced that another case of the clade Ib variant of mpox has been detected, the fifth case confirmed in the country in recent weeks.

The government agency said that the risk to the population remains low, writes Reuters, the Telegraph reports.

It is understood that the case was discovered in Leeds and the patient had recently returned from Uganda, which is seeing transmission of the variant.

Democratic Republic of the Congo

Two types of mpox are spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo – the endemic clade I and the new clade Ib, which spreads more easily through close contact, including sexual contact.

Thailand

An mpox case reported in Thailand was confirmed to be clade Ib of the virus, the first in the country.

The case was first reported on August 21 and Thailand said it was a 66-year-old European man who had arrived from an African country where the disease was spreading.

India

India said an mpox case involving a traveler in the southern state of Kerala was from the fast-spreading clade 1b variant, marking the country's first recorded case of the new strain.

The patient is a 38-year-old man who had traveled from the United Arab Emirates.

Burundi

As of November 15, Burundi recorded 2,003 mpox cases with one death.

In July, the WHO declared that the country was affected by clade Ib.

Kenya

As of November 13, Kenya has confirmed 17 mpox cases with one death, according to WHO data – the cases have been confirmed as clade Ib.

Rwanda

According to WHO data, as of November 6, 26 cases of mpox had been reported locally.

Uganda

As of November 13, Uganda has identified 521 mpox cases, with one death, mostly caused by clade Ib, according to WHO data.

Zambia

On October 10, the country reported its first case of mpox. WHO confirmed it was the clade Ib variant. /Telegraph/
