The Mayor of South Mitrovica, Faton Peci, has reached a coalition agreement with the Democratic League of Kosovo for the leadership of this municipality.
As a result of this coalition, the position of the chairman of the Municipal Assembly went to the LDK, while Safet Kamberi was elected to this position.
Kamberi received the support of 18 assembly members, while 10 voted against and two votes were declared invalid.
In a speech after the election, Kamberi pledged that as mayor, he would "do his best for the Municipality of Mitrovica by advancing everything that is in the interest of the municipality."
"A special thank you to the members of the Assembly, for the trust they gave me, to be the chairman of the Mitrovica Municipal Assembly. And without further ado, I just want to promise something to the members of the Assembly. As the chairman of the Assembly, I will be at the level of responsibility, I will respect in the best possible way the Law on Local Self-Government, as well as the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly and I guarantee that each member of the Assembly will have their own space for discussions. So I pledge that I, as the chairman, will do my best for the Municipality of Mitrovica by advancing everything that is in the interest of the municipality", he said.
The election of the chairman was made at an emergency meeting of the Municipal Assembly, which was called on Wednesday evening at 21:30 p.m. The meeting was originally scheduled to be held on Thursday at 10:00 a.m., but was brought forward due to the legal deadline.
December 11th was the deadline for electing the chairman of the Municipal Assembly.
According to the Law on Local Self-Government, the Speaker of the Assembly must be elected within 30 days of the swearing-in of the mayor.
The newly elected Chairman, Safet Kamberi, has announced that despite the urgent meeting, the Municipal Assembly will also hold a regular session, which will take place tomorrow at 10:00.
Otherwise, Faton Peci was officially sworn in as mayor of the Municipality of South Mitrovica on December 12, 2025.
