Finally a vaccine against HIV?

A new HIV vaccine will be tested in southern Africa later this year after it has met the criteria needed to prove it can help fight the epidemic in Africa.

In 2015, 2.1 million new infections were reported – two-thirds of which occurred in Africa. A small test, known as HVTN100, was carried out in South Africa in 2015 to test the safety and immunity power that that vaccine could give, Telegraph reports.

The vaccine was the first ever to show signs of protection against HIV, with a 31% anti-virus rate. This was enough to excite experts in this field after many years of failure.

The vaccine has been improved and is ready for use in the most vulnerable countries such as Africa.

The trial of this vaccine will take place on a large scale, where 5,400 people will be injected across four cities in southern Africa in November this year and this will continue for three consecutive years. Also, a fifth dose of the vaccine will be given in the hope that the protection will last longer. /Telegraph/
