After Zuckerberg, Bezos donates $1 million to Trump's inauguration

Big tech companies are looking to improve their relationship with the next US president.

Amazon is planning to donate $1 million to Donald Trump's inauguration fund, a company spokesperson has confirmed.

The e-commerce giant will also stream Trump's inauguration on its Prime Video service.

Amazon's announcement comes after Meta said it had donated $1 million to Trump's inauguration fund.

It also followed a confirmation from Trump that Jess Bezos, the founder of Amazon, was planning to visit him next week.

Disputes forgotten?

The meeting marks a change in the relationship between these two.

Bezos has criticized Trump's rhetoric — as Trump criticized political coverage at The Washington Post during his first term.

It is known that Bezos has been the owner of the newspaper since 2013.

In 2019, Amazon also argued in a lawsuit that Trump's bias against the company hurt its chances of winning a $10 billion contract with the Pentagon.

The Biden administration later pursued a contract with Amazon and Microsoft, he writes € news, the Telegraph reports.

But Bezos recently seems to have changed his approach.

Last week, at The New York Times' DealBook Summit in New York, he said he was "optimistic" about Trump's second term, while also endorsing the president-elect's plans to cut regulations.

Meta's donation

Meta's donation, meanwhile, came just weeks after CEO Mark Zuckerberg met privately with Trump at Mar-a-Lago.

As reported, the company's CEO has sought to mend relations with Trump.

Trump was "kicked out" of Facebook after the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.

The company reinstated his account in early 2023.

During the 2024 campaign, Zuckerberg did not endorse a presidential candidate, but he has expressed a more positive opinion of Trump.

Earlier this year, for example, he praised the president-elect's response to his first assassination attempt.

However, Trump continued to attack Zuckerberg publicly during his election campaign.

In July, he posted a message on his Truth Social platform threatening to jail election fraud in part by citing a nickname he used for Meta's CEO.

"ZUCKERBUCKS, be careful," Trump wrote.

Past inaugurations

Companies have traditionally made up a large portion of donors to presidential inaugurations, with one exception in 2009, when then-President Barack Obama refused to accept corporate donations.

He changed his stance for his second inauguration in 2013.

Facebook did not donate to either the 2021 Biden inauguration or the 2017 Trump inauguration.

Google donated $285,000 to Trump's first inauguration and Biden's inauguration, according to Federal Election Commission data.

Microsoft gave $1 million to Obama's second inauguration, but only $500,000 to Trump in 2017 and Biden in 2021.

Amazon had donated roughly $58,000 to Trump's inauguration in 2017, well below the $1 million it now plans to donate.

The company also broadcast Biden's inauguration on Prime Video in 2021. /Telegraph/
