After 50 years, Volkswagen may stop producing in Germany?

For the Golf, Volkswagen can apply the recipe it has already applied with the Beetle. When the Beetle's popularity began to decline, Volkswagen moved production from Germany to Mexico.

German newspaper Handelsblatt claims VW wants to move production of the Golf out of Germany, possibly to Mexico, where it already has a factory. Another option, which is closer to home and is also being considered, is Poland.

The Golf still has good sales figures despite the onslaught of SUVs, and it's not worth it for Volkswagen to end production, although an electric model is coming soon.

So the one that can go to Mexico is the current model 8 or 8.5, as they call it today, equipped with internal combustion engines. The new electric Golf, let's call it the ID.Golf, will be produced in Germany.

The Golf's problem is that Volkswagen's SUVs have higher margins, partly due to higher labor costs in Germany. Moving Golf production overseas could save VW money at a time when every cent counts.

Discussions by VW's supervisory board on the future of the Golf factory in Wolfsburg and elsewhere were due to take place in November, but were postponed due to the strike and negotiations with the works council. /Telegraph/
