Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Wednesday that he would declare a state of emergency for the country's energy sector due to extreme weather conditions and Russian attacks that have left most of Kiev without electricity.

"A state of emergency will be declared for the energy sector of Ukraine," Zelensky said in a statement on the American social platform X after a meeting.

He added that the consequences of the Russian attacks and "deteriorating weather conditions" are severe, while authorities are working around the clock to restore electricity and heating.

Zelensky stressed that a permanent coordination center will be created to address the situation in Kiev and that he has tasked the energy minister with "overseeing work to support people and communities in these conditions, as well as addressing practical issues."

He said work is underway to "significantly" increase the volume of electricity imports into Ukraine, and has also tasked the government with preparing a review of curfew rules "for this extremely cold weather." /AA/
