Zelensky says the talks in Paris with Trump and Macron were "constructive"

French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed US President-elect Donald Trump to his Paris residence, the Elysee Palace.

They were joined at the last minute by the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, before they took part in the reopening of the Notre Dame cathedral, foreign media write, Telegraph reports.

President-elect Trump was making his first overseas trip since winning the election last month.


The French leader extended an invitation to Trump to engage in planned bilateral talks ahead of the US presidential inauguration next month.

The two reportedly held a 90-minute meeting behind closed doors.

Zelensky arrived later and was also received by Macron at the presidential palace. After a warm hug and posing for photos, the French president escorted Zelensky inside where he joined the meeting with Trump and spoke about the ongoing Russian occupation of Ukraine.

Speaking to the media while leaving the Elysee Palace, Zelenskyy said that the meeting with his French counterpart and Trump was "constructive".

In a post on his official Telegram channel, the Ukrainian leader praised the US president-elect, thanking him for his "determination as always".

He went on to say that he explained the situation on the ground to Trump and emphasized his desire to end the war in his country as soon and as fairly as possible, noting Ukraine's desire to reach a "just peace".

Zelensky also thanked Macron for his warm hospitality and hosting the meeting in Paris and pledged to continue working with Ukraine's Western allies in the coming weeks.

Donald Trump has not publicly commented on the meeting on his social media platforms, nor has there been any statement from the French Presidency after the tripartite talks. /Telegraph/
