Zelensky says US 'security guarantees' for Ukraine are ready - after meeting with Trump

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday that he and US President Donald Trump had agreed on US security guarantees after the war in Ukraine, without providing further details.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday criticized the EU's lack of "political will" to stand up to Russian leader Vladimir Putin, during a fiery speech that criticized some of Kiev's key allies at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
The speech to the Davos elite came minutes after Zelensky had met with US President Donald Trump, a conversation he said brought agreement on what US security guarantees would look like after the war over Ukraine.
Zelensky did not say what the security guarantees included, only that they were "finalized" and ready to be signed by leaders and ratified by the Ukrainian parliament and the U.S. Congress.
But in a marked departure from his usual warm rhetoric toward the EU, Kiev's main political and financial backers, Zelensky sharply criticized what he called inaction, drawing parallels to the movie "Groundhog Day" to describe the slow progress in key areas of support for Kiev.
He also said that Europe, without naming any single country, was failing to agree on how to address global problems.
"There are endless internal debates and unspoken things that prevent Europe from uniting and speaking honestly enough to find real solutions," Zelensky said at the forum.
"Instead of becoming a truly global power, Europe remains a beautiful but fragmented kaleidoscope of small and medium-sized powers," he added.
He added that Europe seemed "at a loss" on how to meet the challenge presented by Trump.
"Europe seems lost trying to convince the US president to change. But he won't change. President Trump loves who he is and says he loves Europe, but he won't listen to this kind of Europe."
Trump had hailed a "good" meeting with Zelensky at the Swiss ski resort, hours before his envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner were due to travel to Moscow for talks with Putin.
"This war has to end," Trump told reporters when asked what message he was sending to the Russian leader.
Zelensky emphasizes that the territorial issue was the only unresolved issue in talks to end the war.
"It's all about the eastern part of our country. It's all about land. That's the issue that we (haven't) resolved yet."
Russia, which occupied about 20 percent of Ukraine, is pushing for full control of the country's eastern Donbas region as part of a deal - but Kiev has warned that giving up land would embolden Moscow.Telegrafi/
