Can you get cold from the rain?

Growing up, most of us heard that if we play outside in the rain, we're bound to catch a cold. But now that we're adults, is this advice really accurate? Should we avoid getting wet in the rain?

In fact, there may be a greater chance of getting sick if you stay wet and cold in the rain for a long time. But it's not as simple as that popular saying goes.

When the body is exposed to cold and damp for a long time, the immune system can weaken. This makes it easier for viruses to attack you. However, this does not mean that you will definitely catch a cold, reports Healthline.

Does the rain make you sick?

No. Colds are caused by viruses, not the rain itself. But a 2022 study showed that a drop in body temperature — when you're cold — can weaken the immune system and make the body more susceptible to cold-causing viruses.

So, even though rain doesn't directly make you sick, being wet and cold for a long time can negatively affect your body's defenses and increase your chances of catching a cold if you come into contact with the virus.

How can you be invited?

Colds are caused by more than 200 types of viruses. These viruses are contagious and spread through the air (when someone coughs or sneezes) or through close contact.

You can also get the virus by touching a contaminated surface and then touching your nose, eyes, or mouth with unwashed hands.

How can you prevent colds?

Here are some tips for sitting to prevent catching a cold:

Wash your hands often with soap and water;

Do not share food, drinks or other items with people who appear sick;

Avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose with unwashed hands;

Eat healthy and exercise regularly;

Get enough sleep to keep your body strong and protected.
