Wenger names two players he regrets not signing for Arsenal

Arsene Wenger is the only manager in the history of English football to lead a club to the Premier League title in an unbeaten season, leading Arsenal to Premier League glory in 2004.

The Invincibles were among the most feared teams in European football, with names such as Thierry Henry, Patrick Pirg Vieiran, Robert Vieiran.

But Wenger had two familiar names he had not worked with since leaving the Emirates in 2018, having overseen 1234 matches with a record of 715 wins and 252 losses.

Wenger has made no secret of his admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo, despite the former Manchester United striker being a constant thorn in his side during his reign at Arsenal. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner scored five goals in 11 Premier League games against the Frenchman's side during his first spell at Old Trafford.

Wenger explained how close the Portuguese came to joining Arsenal before moving to Old Trafford in the summer of 2003: "Which player did I regret most not signing? Cristiano Ronaldo of course. I thought it was possible and if we had been a little bit quicker, a few days... Because we had agreed and Man United came five, six days later."

Another former Premier League star who enjoyed coming up against Arsenal was N'Golo Kante, who dominated the midfield in the Gunners' meetings with Chelsea. The France international is, for many, one of the greatest defensive midfielders in the history of the English league and a player Wenger would have liked to have brought to the Emirates: "So I would say at the beginning of my career, Cristiano Ronaldo. At the end of my career, N'Golo Kante."

"We could have easily had Kante because he played at a club in Paris called Suresnes where one of my best friends is the director. And he said to me: 'Please, I have a player, he is incredible. Nobody wants him in France'. He took him in his car and travelled with him from club to club. And finally, a third division club in France got N'Golo Kante," the French legend further revealed.

Wenger left his mark on the English game and paved the way for foreign managers such as Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp to enjoy similar success in the Premier League. /Telegraph/
