US President Donald Trump has announced a wave of tariffs on European allies until the United States is allowed to buy Greenland.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the 10% tariffs will take effect on February 1 for Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland.

These tariffs will increase to 25% on June 1 and will remain in effect until an agreement is reached on the purchase of Greenland from the US.

Trump accused several European countries of playing a "very dangerous game" in Greenland, saying "world peace is at risk."

"Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland went to Greenland for an unknown purpose. These countries are playing this very dangerous game, they took an unacceptable risk," according to Trump.

Therefore, he sees tariffs as a way to quickly end this potentially dangerous situation.

But his action did not go unanswered.

The reaction of some of the leaders of the countries threatened with tariffs was immediate.

French President Emmanuel Macron said that France is committed to the sovereignty and independence of nations, in Europe and beyond.

"Europeans will respond to them in a united and coordinated way if they are confirmed," he added.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's reaction was also not lacking.

"Our position on Greenland is very clear - it is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and its future is a matter for Greenlanders and Danes," he said. /Telegraph/
