Washington passes measure to ban sales of gas-powered cars by 2030 - an electric future

Washington state lawmakers have passed a measure that would phase out the sale of gas-powered vehicles starting in 2030.

According to foreign media, the "Clean Cars 2030" initiative was passed on Thursday as an amendment to a bill that requires state services to prepare for a future of electric vehicles; the amendment now awaits the signature of the governor, Jay Inslee.

That's five years earlier than planned gas vehicle bans in California and Massachusetts, and the first gas car ban passed by lawmakers, rather than an executive order.

The bill passed the Washington Senate on a 25-23 vote, and a 54-43 vote in the House of Representatives.

The move comes as efforts to increase the adoption of electric vehicles are accelerating over concerns about the contribution of fossil fuels to climate change. /Telegraph/
