Volvo EX90 wins “Luxury Car of the Year” title at World Car Awards

The Volvo EX90, the most impressive electric car launched in the last 12 months, has been named “Luxury Car of the Year” by the expert jury of the World Car Awards.

The seven-seat family SUV won the title due to its comfortable and refined interior, advanced safety technology and distinctive Scandinavian design.

EX90 triumphed as the results were announced ahead of the New York International Auto Show in Manhattan.

The World Car Awards jury, made up of 96 car journalists from 30 countries, evaluated the EX90 during intensive testing, where they were able to fully enjoy the EX90's smooth and powerful 510 horsepower twin-turbo engine drive, along with its ergonomic and luxurious interior designed for comfort on long journeys.

“We are delighted to see the EX90 getting the recognition it deserves,” he says. “It was up against strong competition, but this award proves that the EX90 attracts some of the most demanding customers around the world.” Håkan Samuelsson, CEO of Volvo Cars

The design approach for the EX90 is simple and based on some basic principles of Scandinavian design, where form follows function.

The front end is confident but gently rounded, allowing air to flow optimally around the car. This design, combined with flat elements such as the side windows, significantly improves aerodynamics and efficiency.

Integrating lidar into the EX90 was an aerodynamic challenge, but a worthwhile one because of its contribution to safety when combined with cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors.

Together, they provide a detailed image of what is happening around the car. To maximize its effectiveness and reduce aerodynamic drag, it is integrated into the center of the roofline under a low-profile cover – an almost seamless solution.

Inside the cabin, which is among the quietest in the segment, EX90 introduces progressive new materials that highlight Volvo Cars' unique perspective on modern luxury.

Thanks to its true seven-seat configuration, the EX90 offers an advantage that is rare in its segment: ample luggage space. With all seven seats up, the EX90 has a cargo capacity of up to 324 liters behind the third row. With the third row folded, storage capacity goes up to 697 liters, making the EX90 stand out among many of its peers.

With this title, Volvo Cars has won three World Car Awards, including the 2018 World Car of the Year for the Volvo XC60 and the 2024 City Car of the Year for the Volvo EX30. In 2018, Volvo Cars CEO Håkan Samuelsson was the first winner of the World Car Person of the Year award.

For the full year 2024, Volvo Car Group recorded a record underlying operating profit of SEK 27 billion. Revenue in 2024 reached a historic high of SEK 400.2 billion, while global sales reached a record 763,389 cars.
