UEFA could make changes to Champions League due to Arsenal 'complaints'

UEFA is discussing making three fundamental changes to the Champions League format, despite the competition's recent overhaul in a major way.

For the first time in the competition's history, the Champions League switched to a 36-team league table where teams played a total of eight matches, which were determined by UEFA's software.

However, many still have problems with the organisation. According to German newspaper Bild, UEFA is ready to discuss possible changes for the 2025/26 Champions League season - with Arsenal's main problem on the agenda.

Arsenal are said to have been critical of the format because they had to play Real away from home in the second leg, even though they finished eight places ahead of them in the table.

Although Arsenal won 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu, they will also have the same appearance in the semi-final against PSG even though the French team also had to make the play-offs.

Barcelona may also feel irritated after finishing ahead of Inter, but will play the second leg in Milan.

They were given the privilege of being at home in the round of 16, as were the other seven teams, but a rule change could mean the home-leg advantage carries over into the entire knockout stage.

Furthermore, it is claimed that UEFA will consider abolishing extra time and implementing penalty kicks after a draw – although football's law-making body, IFAB, has not received any requests to make a blanket ruling on extra time.

Traditionally, teams from the same nation could not meet until the quarter-finals, but this time it happened in the play-offs as well as in the round of 16 – with PSG facing Brest, Bayern Munich beating Bayer Leverkusen and Real eliminating Atletico on penalties.

It is believed that the matches are not seen as attractive and will be a major topic at the Club Competitions Committee on May 30, the day before the Champions League final. /Telegraph/
