Two-thirds of people in the EU live in their own homes, in Macedonia 87%

More than two-thirds of people living in households in the EU own their home, compared to 32% who live in rented accommodation. In Macedonia, about 87% live in their own home, while 12,9% rent, Eurostat data shows.
According to the latest data, in 2024, more than two-thirds of the population living in households in the EU owned their home, which is slightly less compared to 69% in 2023. The remaining 32% lived in rented accommodation, which represents an increase from 31% in the previous year.
For Macedonia and the countries in the region, the latest available Eurostat data is for 2023, so the largest share of people live in owner-occupied homes in Albania – 95,5%, followed by Croatia – 91,2%, Serbia – 89,9%, Macedonia – 87,1%, Bulgaria – 86,1% and Greece – 69,6%.
