As Iranians move closer to naming their next supreme leader, US President Donald Trump said the new leader "won't last long" if Iranians don't first get his approval.

"He will have to get our approval," the president said.

"If it doesn't get our approval, it won't last long," he added.

"I don't want people to come back in five years and do the same thing again or worse, let them have a nuclear weapon," Trump added.

When asked if he would be willing to endorse someone with ties to the old regime, Trump replied: "I would, to choose a good leader I would, yes, I would. There are a lot of people who could qualify."

According to Trump, Iran was planning to invade the entire Middle East and suggested that he stop them from doing so.

"They're a paper tiger. They weren't a paper tiger a week ago, I'll tell you. And they would attack," he said.

"Their plan was to attack the entire Middle East, to occupy the entire Middle East," the US president continued.

He also hasn't ruled out sending special forces to seize Iran's enriched uranium: "Everything is on the table. Everything." /Telegraph/
