Trump: Qatar to buy 160 Boeing planes worth $200 billion

Qatar signed an agreement on Wednesday to purchase 160 aircraft from American manufacturer Boeing for the needs of Qatar Airways.

The agreement was signed by US President Donald Trump and the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, during the US leader's visit to this Gulf country.

Trump stated that the deal is worth $200 billion and includes 160 aircraft, writes cnn.

"So it's over $200 billion, but $160 is just for airplanes - that's fantastic," said the 78-year-old and added that "this is a record, Kelly, so congratulations to Boeing," addressing Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg, who was present in the room.

Otherwise, orders for Boeing over the past year almost stopped after an emergency door broke off an Alaska Airlines 737 Max plane in early 2024, leaving a large hole in the fuselage of the plane.

Although there was a rebound in orders towards the end of 2024, Boeing's gross orders were just 569 for the full year - a huge 60 percent drop compared to 2023.

The tariffs imposed by Trump were another blow to the company, which was already facing difficulties.

Boeing is the largest American exporter and the tariffs risk making the production of aircraft much more expensive, especially if foreign countries impose retaliatory tariffs. /Telegraph/
