Trump threatens China with 10 percent tariffs and warns EU could face them too

Donald Trump has threatened China with a 10 percent tariff on its imports, and has warned that taxes could also be imposed on the European Union.

The president told reporters at a press conference late yesterday that his administration was discussing the 10 percent rate because fentanyl – a powerful opioid – was being shipped from China to the US through Mexico and Canada.

He said the tariffs could be implemented as early as February 1, the Telegraph reports.

Speaking about the EU and other countries, he said they had a worrying trade surplus with the US.

"The European Union is very, very bad for us. So they will be interested in tariffs. That's the only way you will have justice," he said.

Trump also suggested that Canada and Mexico could face tariffs of 25 percent if they do not stop the trafficking of illegal immigrants and fentanyl. /Telegraph
