Trump says US should take Gaza and turn it into a 'free zone'

US President Donald Trump has declared that the Gaza Strip should be returned to what he called a US-controlled "free zone", although the specifics of his proposal remain unclear.

"I have concepts for Gaza that I think are very good, make it a free zone, let the United States get involved and make it just a free zone. You have a real free zone, because it seems like Gaza, every time, every 10 years, happens to it and more than that," Trump said.

"It actually happens all the time. It doesn't solve the Gaza problem," he added.

Trump said that "if necessary, he thinks he would be proud for the US to take it and make it a free zone," he writes. AA, the Telegraph reports.

"Let some good things happen. Get people home where they can be safe," the US president continued.

Otherwise, Trump first presented his proposal for the US to take ownership of Gaza in February.

The plan was widely opposed by nations around the world, but he has continued to reiterate it over the past three months.

However, his description of the "freedom zone" is new.

Details of what this would entail remain scarce as the president did not provide further details. /Telegraph/
