Trump responds to Salman's $600 billion offer: He should round up the investment to a trillion

Saudi Arabia will invest $600 billion in the United States in the coming years, President Donald Trump declared, before quickly adding that he wants to see an even larger amount.

"But I will ask the crown prince, who is a fantastic figure, to round it up to around a trillion. I think he will, because we have been very good to them," the 78-year-old said during a speech via video link at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Shortly after his inauguration on Monday, Trump held a phone conversation with Saudi Arabia's crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, who is considered the de facto ruler of the Gulf kingdom.

The White House announced that this was the first phone call that Trump had with a foreign leader during his second presidential term.

Newly appointed Secretary of State Marco Rubio also spoke with Bin Salman shortly after taking office.

Trump was asked on his first day in office what his first foreign trip would be. The president said that during his first term, he first traveled to Saudi Arabia, after that country had announced $450 billion in investments.

Asked if he would go back to the beginning, he said it was possible, if they were willing to invest the same amount or more. Trump also told leaders in Davos that he would pressure Saudi Arabia to lower global oil prices. /Telegraph/
