US President Donald Trump has stated that he met with Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, describing the meeting as a "great honor".
In a public statement, Trump said that Machado had presented him with her Nobel Peace Prize as a token of appreciation for the work he has done.
"It was a great honor for me to meet María Corina Machado from Venezuela today. She is an extraordinary woman who has overcome many challenges. María presented me with her Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of the work I have done. A beautiful and meaningful gesture of mutual respect," Trump said, publicly thanking Machado.
In a brief response, asked why she had awarded the Nobel Prize to Trump, Machado replied "because he deserves it."
