Donald Trump has announced that the US will impose an additional 100% tariff on Chinese imports, accusing it of taking an "extremely aggressive position" on trade.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Friday, the US president said Beijing had sent an "extremely hostile letter to the world" and had imposed "large-scale export controls on almost every product they produce".

Trump, who warned that additional tariffs would begin on November 1, said the US would also impose export controls on any "critical software" for China, foreign media wrote, according to the Telegraph.

The president added that he was imposing the tariffs because of export controls placed on rare metals from China.

He wrote: "Based on the fact that China has taken this unprecedented stance, and speaking only of the United States, and not of other nations that were similarly threatened, effective November 1, 2025 (or sooner, subject to any further actions or changes taken by China), the United States of America will impose a 100% tariff on China, on top of any tariffs they are currently paying."

"It is impossible to believe that China would have taken such an action, but they did, and the rest is history. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"

Trump said earlier Friday that "there seems to be no reason" to meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping as part of an upcoming trip to South Korea.

He added: "There are many other countermeasures that are also being seriously considered." /Telegraph/
