US President Donald Trump has declared that the US has carried out "large-scale attacks against Venezuela" and captured its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, and his wife.

Trump announced this in a statement on his social network Truth Social.

"The United States of America has successfully carried out a large-scale attack against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who, along with his wife, has been captured and flown out of the country," Trump wrote.

"This operation was conducted in cooperation with U.S. law enforcement. Details will follow below. There will be a press conference today at 11:00 a.m. at Mar-a-Lago. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP," he added.

Otherwise, Maduro had declared a national state of emergency and denounced the attacks as an attempt by the US to take his country's oil and minerals.

His statement said the attacks on Caracas were aimed at "seizing Venezuela's strategic resources, especially its oil and minerals" and "forcibly breaking the country's political independence."

He called on "all social and political forces in the country to activate mobilization plans and condemn this attack." /Telegraph/
